It was founded in 1761 by William Amherst, who was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. The town was originally called Amherst Courthouse and served as the county seat for Amherst County until 1807 when it was renamed Amherst. It grew steadily throughout the 19th century and became an important trading center for farmers in the region. In 1892, the railroad arrived in Amherst and that marked a significant change for the town as it became a hub for transportation and commerce. During this time, several mills were built to process local crops such as tobacco and wheat, which provided many local jobs. As time went on, more businesses opened up around town including general stores, blacksmiths, hotels, banks and other services. The town also saw its first school open in 1877 with a total enrollment of just twenty students at that time.
