RYE AND POTATO GROWING ZONE
A zone of contiguous arable farming with rye, barley and potatoes as the main products defines the agricultural landscape of Northeast Europe. In addition to agriculture, there is also intensive livestock farming in many places, especially pigs and cattle. Climatically, this zone is separated from the boreal coniferous forest in the north and the permanent grassland in the west.

Rye is not only the most frost-hardy cereal, but also the one with the least demands on soil and climate; Rye, for example, tolerates cool summers and drought. However, the area under cultivation is declining overall because wheat cultivation is advancing more and more northwards through the breeding of new varieties. Wheat replaces rye and other grains because high yields, prices and proceeds can be achieved with it.

In Europe, barley is mainly grown as animal feed and for beer production. It has a short growing season and makes high demands on the soil.

The potato has become a staple food in central and northern Europe in recent centuries due to its high volume yields. It is very adaptable to the climate and accepts cool and humid weather. In the Alps it thrives at altitudes of 1500 to 2000 meters.

Numerous locations in the lowlands with poor soils and in the higher elevations of the low mountain ranges have contiguous forest areas. For more information about the continent of Europe, please check topb2bwebsites.com.
