Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands are an archipelago in the southwest Pacific, in the west of the Solomon Islands is Papua New Guinea, which also includes the northeastern islands of the Solomon Islands group. The proportions of the islands range in size from 193 km to a small coral atoll. The landscape is mostly rugged. The capital of the Solomon Islands, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal, where the highest peak of the Solomon Islands rises (Mount Popomanaseu, 2,332 m). the slope to the main summit is relatively low on one side, but drops steeply on the other side. The entire area of the archipelago is volcanically active.
There is only one international airport in the Solomon Islands (in Hoiara). The Solomon Islands are suitable as a travel destination for divers, pure beach holidaymakers and sun worshipers, or those interested in culture. The ideal starting point for sightseeing is the capital Honiara. Here you can admire hundreds of different orchids in the Botanical Garden and research for relics of the past in the National Museum.
The most widely spoken language in the Solomon Islands is Melanesian pidgin. Almost all the residents of the Solomon Islands speak this language. About 3 percent of the people use the Polynesian languages and only about 2.1 percent belong to the Micronesian language group.
The population of the Solomon Islands is made up of several different groups of people. In addition to the indigenous groups, there are also Chinese, Indian and Australian as well as some European groups who have immigrated to the Solomon Islands in the course of history.
There is a small turnaround in the Solomon Islands health care system. During 2007 life expectancy was still around 66 years, this has increased significantly. In addition, the birth rate is very high in the Solomon Islands. With over 5.5 births per woman, the country is statistically way ahead. A lot is currently being invested in forms of health, so that health care in the Solomon Islands is improving.
