Central and South America – states and populations
In Central America, the boundaries that emerged during the nation-building phase in the early 19th century still exist. More recent are the states of Panama, which gained independence from Columbia in 1903, and Belize, the former British Honduras, which received limited autonomy in 1964 and has been independent since 1981. Most of the island states of the Caribbean gained their independence after the Second World War.
In South America, the borders have shifted slightly in many places since 1825 without the nation-state structure of the continent having changed significantly. The greater Guiana landscape in northern South America is now divided into Guyana (1966, formerly British), Suriname (1975, previously Dutch) and the former penal colony of French Guiana. The Chaco War changed the course of the border between Bolivia and Paraguay in the 1930s. Peru had to surrender some parts of the country to Chile in the south, but was able to expand in the north at the expense of Ecuador in 1942. After their occupation by Argentina in 1982, the Falkland Islands in the extreme south of the continent triggered a war with Great Britain, which ended with a victory for the British troops after heavy fighting.
BIG STATES, SMALL STATES
In Central and South America there are very large states alongside numerous very small states. Brazil, Mexico and Argentina are among the largest countries in the world in terms of population and area. Brazil ranks fifth in terms of population and area (24 times as large as Germany, 2.5 times as many residents). In the Caribbean in particular, there are numerous small and very small island states. Jamaica, for example, is half the size of Hesse and has half as many residents as the state. In terms of population, it is ranked 138th in the world, and 161st in terms of area. St. Kitts and Nevis are among the smallest countries in the world (area and population: 189th out of 196). In terms of area, the dwarf state of Bielefeld is comparable to a city like Ahlen in terms of population. For more information about the continent of South America, please check topb2bwebsites.com.
