Solomon Islands. During the year, a new law came into force that can provide up to three years in prison for violence in close relationships. It can also be a prison to prevent police or health care personnel from intervening in domestic violence.

According to countryaah, the current population of Solomon Islands is 686,895. The new law was celebrated by Vois Blong Mere (The Voice of Women), a rights group that fought for domestic violence to become a criminal offense and not a private matter. Two out of three women are said to have been subjected to domestic violence and the Solomon Islands have been listed as the worst country in the world when it comes to sexual violence against women.

In April, a study was published showing that five of the country’s small islands have disappeared in 40 years when sea levels have risen and sandy beaches have been washed away. Six other islands have been severely attacked and are at risk according to researchers. In the last two decades, the sea has risen by up to 10 millimeters a year in the Solomon Islands.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare gave a speech in July on behalf of his and previous governments apologizing for the bloody conflict that plagued the Solomon Islands for five years from 1998. Sogavare said that ethnic violence could erupt because government policy did not take sufficient account of the country’s ethnic diversity and traditional land ownership. More than 100 people were killed and about 20,000 fled their homes because of the conflict.

In 2012, according to thereligionfaqs, Solomon became the first Pacific State to open an embassy in Cuba. Since the turn of the millennium, Cuba has been working to strengthen its ties with the small Pacific states that have otherwise traditionally agreed with the United States in the annual vote on the superpower blockade of Cuba. Cuba contributes doctors and nurses to the small island states.

In February 2013, Solomon Islands was hit by an undersea earthquake with a torque of 8.0. Its epicenter was at a depth of 28.7km 76km west of the island of Nendo. It triggered a small 1m altitude tsunami reaching 500m inland. Despite the limited size, 9 were killed. In April 2014, the area was hit by a new 7.6 magnitude quake on the Richter scale. Its epicenter was located 100km southeast of Kira Kira. No injuries were reported in this quake.

In May 2013, together with the governments of Nauru, Vanuatu Tuvalu and East Timor, Lilo reinstated French Polynesia on the UN list of colonial areas without independence. The initiative triggered strong reactions from the colonial power in Paris and its settler government in Papete.

In December 2014, Manasseh Sogavare assumed the post of Prime Minister.

In November 2017, Sogavare lost a vote of confidence in Parliament. Seventeen members of his own Democratic Coalition for Change coalition voted against him. According to them because the prime minister had lost touch with reality and lost himself in conspiracy theories. Sogavare itself thought it was because they were afraid of being affected by the anti-corruption law dealt with by Parliament. Rick Houenipwela, who had been Finance Minister until then, was elected as new Prime Minister.
